In Canada for the academic term of 2024/2025, the Vancouver Public Scholars Awards present a unique chance to aspiring scholars enrolled at the University of British Columbia (UBC). These prestigious awards aim to recognize and bolster exceptional graduate students who demonstrate a strong dedication to public engagement and impactful research endeavors.

Endowed with a value of up to $10,000 per installment and awarded twice, totaling $20,000 per recipient, these accolades offer crucial financial support for innovative and collaborative scholarly pursuits that might otherwise go unexplored. Tailored to meet the specific requirements of each recipient, this financial assistance, provided through the Vancouver Public Scholars Awards at UBC for the academic year 2024/2025, encompasses research grants, backing for professional development initiatives, and travel expenses linked to scholarly activities. Additionally, stipends are offered to students experiencing financial constraints with their current funding sources, enabling them to pursue alternative projects.

Each year, around 30 promising students from various faculties at UBC, including UBCO, qualify for this funding opportunity, with the potential for renewal funding in the subsequent year for participants within the cohort.

University of British Columbia scholarship Benefits:

The PSI Fellowship aims to offer financial assistance, totaling up to $10,000 provided in two disbursements, equating to $20,000 per student. Its primary objective is to support innovative and collaborative academic pursuits that students may find challenging to undertake due to financial constraints. This funding initiative provides versatility in its usage and encompasses two key components:

  • Research Grant: This facet of the fellowship furnishes financial aid for professional development or travel directly linked to scholarly endeavors. It encompasses expenses associated with research activities, conference participation, or any other initiatives contributing to the progress of the proposed project.
  • Student Support: In cases where a student’s existing funding prohibits engagement in alternative projects, the PSI Fellowship can allocate funds for a student stipend. This ensures that students possess the necessary financial support to focus on their proposed alternative project(s) without encountering financial barriers.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Doctoral candidates enrolled at UBC Vancouver (including those pursuing PhDs, EdDs, DMAs, and part-time PhDs) in their first to fifth years of study, as well as doctoral candidates at UBC Okanagan within the same timeframe, are eligible to seek financial support.
  • To qualify, candidates must have completed their doctoral program within a maximum timeframe of 48 months by August 31, 2023, and must be officially registered in a UBC doctoral program by September 1, 2023. Exceptions for eligibility extending beyond this period, up to a maximum of 60 months of doctoral study (under extraordinary circumstances), may be considered.
  • All funding recipients are required to submit a report upon the conclusion of their first (and if applicable, second) year of funding, and are expected to present their research at a Network event titled “PhDs Go Public.” Additionally, both students and their academic mentors must complete a comprehensive questionnaire upon the conclusion of their funding or participation.
